Thota Vaikuntam

Thota Vaikutam’s work has a distinctive rural flavor. He finds inspiration in the men and women of his village. The use of rich and vibrant primary colors gives a strong depth to his sensual portrayal of characters. He holds a Diploma in Painting from Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University, Hyderabad, 1970. He won the Lalit Kala Fellowship to study in Painting and Printmaking from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda in 1972. He has participated in several shows in India and abroad including the 'Post Independence Masters' at Aicon Gallery, New York, in 2008 and ‘6 Artists Show’ at 1x1 Gallery, Dubai, in 2006. He has been honored with the National Award for Painting by Lalit Kala Akademi, in 1993, and has won awards from Hyderabad Art Society, Andhra Pradesh, Lalit Kala Akademi, Hyderabad, Mahakoshal Kala Samithi, Madhya Pradesh, 1979, Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta 1979, Bharat Bhavan Biennale 1988. He also won a National Award for Art Direction in 1989 for the Telugu film “Daasi”. Vaikuntam’s works are found in important private, public and corporate collections in India and other countries. The artist lives and works in Hyderabad.
